The Sankofa symbol, represented either by a mythical bird or a stylized heart, embodies a reverence for the past, forebears, history, and elders. The bird reaching back for an egg signifies the diligence required to acknowledge the past and its role in the present. Sankofa holds significant meaning for Africans in the diaspora, often serving as a totem in their quest to connect with their African roots. Despite the painful history of enslavement, the principle of Sankofa encourages learning from the past, acknowledging its flaws, and striving to do better, emphasizing the importance of not forgetting our roots as they invariably influence our lives.
